Signs of the Kingdom

The Kingdom of God, or the Dream of God, is God’s personal mission to heal the world of all the things that cause God’s heart grief and to restore life to all that God created it to be. It is a bottom-up, grass roots movement. God came in the form of a Palestinian peasant named Jesus because God knows the way to change the world is from the inside out – one person, one heart at a time.  (Click Here to Read More).

Signs of this mission, this movement, are all around us.  For followers of Jesus these signs help guide our lives, give us purpose, and give us hope.

Special Forces

In this series we are looking at how after the resurrection of Jesus, God began using a small group of normal men and women with jobs and families just like you and me to continue Jesus’ huge mission of rescuing the world from the inside out, one heart, one person at a time.  In time these people who followed the “Way of Jesus” became known as Christians and this movement they were a part of became known as the Church.

The Church has had its setbacks and missteps along the way – as any great movement will that is comprised of people, but neither internal corruption or external threats have ever been able to stop this movement of God from bringing its precious gift to the world: the gift of the Gospel, God’s transformational message of Good News to the world.  The message of God, the creator of the universe, coming to live among us as a man named Jesus to show us who God is, dying on the cross to show us who we are, and coming back from the dead to show us what God is doing about it.

Lent

Lent is a special season in the Christian year that begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter.  Lent is a time of year where we prepare ourselves for the joy of Easter by clearing out space in our lives and our hearts for God to work. It is a call to weep for what we could have been and are not. Lent is a space to grieve for what we should have done, but didn’t do. Lent is the opportunity to change what we ought to change but have not changed.

Lent is about becoming, doing and changing whatever it is that holds us back from being completely open to God. Lent is an invitation to die…so that we can begin really living.  (This series description was adapted from the writings of Sister Joan Chittister, OSB)

Rhythms

As we go through life we all develop a kind of rhythm, or a set of habits, that shape our life.  These can be everyday things like whether we brush our teeth before we go to bed, what kind of food we eat, or how much TV we watch.  They can also be things like what we do when we are depressed, how we respond when someone makes us angry, and what things we celebrate.  There is a rhythm to the way we spend our money, the way we spend our free time, who we hang out with, and the things we think about.  All of these smaller rhythms come together to form the rhythm of our life.  They shape who we are, how we think, and how we live.

When God came among us in Jesus Christ he also had a rhythm to his life. A rhythm, a set of habits, a way of being, that shaped his life and defined who he was.  It is this rhythm of the life of Jesus that has and continues to change the world from the inside out, one heart, one life at a time.  The trick for those of us who are followers of Jesus then, is to get the rhythms of our lives in sync with the rhythms of the life of Jesus.
