“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:13-14
In our journey together, our values are things that keep us moving towards the center, towards living with Jesus as Lord, towards living into the Dream of God. All of our values are interrelated – they are all dependent on each other and work together to move us towards our center.
This is our fuel. It is what drives us. It is what makes us sing for joy and what keeps us from giving up in the hard times. We love God because God so completely loves us – always has, always will, no matter what.
This is our headlight. It is the thing that keeps our eyes open throughout our journey, ready to learn and grow from every opportunity. Humility is what reminds us that none of us have arrived yet and that we all have room to grow. Humility helps us to be honest with ourselves and with each other.
This is our wheel. The Way of Jesus is never just theoretical but it is something that is practiced and lived out. Service to God, service to ourselves, and service to others is where the rubber hits the road. It is what gives us experience and perspective in the journey. Service is what shapes us the most into being contributors instead of consumers.
This is our engine. Faithfulness is a combination of trust in God, obedience to God, and a willingness to take risks for God – to follow God beyond what our eyes can see. Faithfulness is what converts our fuel to power.
This is our compass. Our commitment to learn from scripture, from each other, from our Christian history, from our own experience, from the Spirit of God, and from the best resources we have available helps us to continue to navigate our way through the messiness of life towards our center – Jesus Christ.
